Message	is gone when the oil is drained. In the days of non-detergent oil, a lot of the dirt that the filter didn't catch would accumulate and crud up the engine. In some cases oil passages would eventually plug up and cause serious damage. Sub-micron particles may discolor the oil but not really hurt it's luricating ability.
